"novidades legais"

márcio local stands at the crossroads of two great traditions in modern brazilian music, with one foot in samba, the heavily percussive afro-brazilian dance music that took its modern form in the early twentieth century, and the other in soul, the african american music rooted in the blues that attracted a mass audience in brazil in the 1960s and 1970s. once regarded as a faddish import, soul music has been effectively brazilianized such that it now constitutes a local tradition in big cities like são paulo and márcio's home town of rio de janeiro. márcio has also discovered ways to combine these two traditions to forge new variations of samba-soul by exploring the ever-expanding modern soundscape of rio.

his tunes are populated by hustlers with street savvy, triumphant soccer stars, fantastically talented dancers, and elegant black women-- as in "preta luxo" (black lady luxury). these songs celebrate a rio de janeiro steeped in afro-brazilian traditions, yet constantly devouring and reinventing new sounds and styles. on this album márcio local pays homage to earlier generations of black artists in brazil who forged new combinations of r&b, soul, and funk with samba, bossa nova, and other brazilian sounds. he collaborated with producer mario caldato, as well as armando pittigliani who worked with jorge ben at the beginning of his career in the 1960s. in other songs we hear the sound of wilson simonal, known in the late 1960s as the 'rei do pilantragem'- the king of hustlers. pilantragem was a playful style of soul samba, bolstered by a fat horn section, often involving risqué double entendre and flirtatious boasting. marcio revives this sound in songs like "ela não tá nem aí" (she pays no mind) and one of his local hits, "happy endings".

many of the reports from rio today speak of narco-gang warfare, police repression, and the general dissolution of the social fabric. the denunciation of violence has inevitably emerged as a key theme in a lot of the contemporary culture of urban brazil today. this context lurks in the background of márcio's songs, but he constantly reminds us that rio is also a place of beauty, revelry, and hope. buy here

lovely work from bebel gilberto -- her debut for verve -- which in a way, brings her home, given that verve released so many great records in the 60s from brazilian artists with boundary skirting appeal! bebel's work has never lacked warmth, but she's bringing even more of it to this set, with less clubby textures, and more of a timeless blend of voice, strings and percussion. even the tunes produced or co-produced by john king of the dust brothers and mark ronson are steeped in a real love of classic bossa soul, just done with a nice modern groove, with some subtle programming. carlinhos brown's percussion is kind of the secret sauce here, but there's no overshadowing bebel's lovely, wonderful vocals -- and the covers are very well chosen. a little less than half the songs are sung in english, and titles include "cancao de amor", bob marley's "sun is shining", stevie wonder's "the real thing", "ela", "far from the sea", "all in one" and more.buy here

a hip take on one of the most brilliant brazilian labels of the past few decades -- london's legendary far out records, home to some of the best bossa sounds on the planet -- carefully compiled and mixed here by the mighty gilles peterson! peterson's been a friend of the label since it's inception, and has always given the far out team some strong respect -- so you can bet that his selection of work from the imprint goes far far beyond the obvious, and includes a fair bit of rare material, out of print gems, and other cool bits that you probably don't have in your collection, even if you're already a far out fan! the package features five totally exclusive tracks, too -- mixed for peterson by friends from the london scene -- and a couple of vintage nuggets too, which helps give a lot of historical depth to this already classic-sounding mix. peterson brings together a total of 23 tracks in a run of music that's over 70 minutes in length -- often very acoustic, but with some key electric touches too -- on cuts that include "depois do carnival (spiritual south rmx)" by azymuth, "tudo de bom (domu re-edit)" by arthur verocai, "que sou eu" by krishnanda, "galope" by aleuda, "berimbal (capoeira)" by grupo batuque, "uno esta" by alex malheiros & banda utopia, "joanna" by jose roberto bertrami, "os escravos do jo" by friends from rio with celia vaz, "obnoxious" by jose mauro, "esta tudo ai" by krishnanda, "e isso ai" by sidney miller, "balinha" by binario, "melo dos dois bicudos" by azymuth, "feijao com arroz (bass line mix)" by joyce, and "vagalume" by democustico. buy here

an amazing batch of rare 60s bossa nova -- all hand-picked by the mighty nicola conte, an artist who definitely shows a strong love of the bossa in his own music! the package digs even deeper than conte's first volume in the viagem series -- and brings together loads of rare bits we haven't seen reissued before, mixed with some other killers from the rge catalog of the 60s -- definitely the farther reaches of bossa recordings in brazil from the time, and the kind of tunes we're happy to have together in a sweet little set like this! there's loads of groovy rhythms, jazzy instrumentation, and great lead vocals on some of the cuts -- and the collection features 18 gems that include "bossa nova" by bobby mckay, "balanco do mar" by zil rozendo, "ninguem na rua" by dick farney, "sem deus a familia" by cesar roldao vieira, "yema tres" by tema tres, "queimada" by anamaria bom, "miss bikini" by marcia with manfredo fest trio, "se a treisteza chegar" by lygia, "maria fulo" by flora, "redondo sambao" by as meninas, "consolacao" by tenorio jr, "sambinha" by vera, "amanha" by janinha, "bossa so" by sansa trio, and "deixa o morro cantar" by claudia. buy here

an amazing little record -- a 70s session that we'd easily rank right up there with the best recordings ever from joyce, but one that's only being issued here for the first time ever! the sound is brilliant -- that beautiful mix of strong and sweet that you'll always find when joyce is at her best -- and the set features equally wonderful contributions from nana vasconcelos on percussion, and mauricio maestro on bass, vocals, and guitar! all sounds are acoustic, but have this otherworldly feel -- that buoyant, sparkling sort of quality on joyce classics like feminina or agua e luz -- the there's a driving sense of rhythm that really moves the whole album -- taking it far past what you might expect from the spare instrumentation. tremendous stuff throughout, and a musical discovery that has us falling in love with the music of joyce all over again! titles include "clareana", "metralhadeira", "nacional kid", "tudo bonito", "memorias do porvir", "visoes do amanhecer", "chegada", and "banana". buy here

lovely work from clara moreno -- a set that's much more laidback than some of her earlier dancefloor work, and one that's filled with bossa instrumentation throughout! joyce co-produced the set, and you can really hear some of her acoustic soul in the music -- a warm blend of snapping percussion, skipping guitar lines, and occasional bits of keyboards and horns -- used in ways that still really let moreno stay in the lead, captivating our ears with her wonderful vocals! clara's style has a breathy undercurrent, which is a nice change from some of the too-polished contemporary bossa sets -- and guests on the record include orlandivo on vocals and joao donato on piano -- both folks we'd welcome on any album. titles include "mestico", "bebete", "balanco zona sul", "bruxaria", "brincando de samba", "jeito bom de sofrer", "samba de negro", and "uala ualala". buy here

back in 2002, strut released ‘black rio’ compiled by london dj cliffy, a snapshot of the ‘70s black rio soul and funk movement in brazil. in march, strut release the second volume inthe series, delving deeper into the vaults to sample some of the lesser known gems emerging from the carnival capital during the era.whilst tropicalia had given brazil’s musicians and songwriters a powerful political voice during the ‘60s, the black rio movement had to battle the odds – black soul was perceived as not being authentically brazilian and the country was under the rule of general emilio garrastazu medici’s oppressive dictatorship which effectively suffocated cultural expression between 1969 and 1974. still, the movement took hold as disenchanted black brazilian youth mirrored the struggles of their contemporaries in the us with their own potent brew of samba, soul and funk. black rio parties attracted thousands, bands including banda black rio and uniao black were created from the scene and music figureheads like jorge ben began exploring more dense, afro directions on albums including ‘africa brasil’. while black rio vol. 1 brought together pioneers of the movement like tim maia and gerson king combo, volume 2 digs deeper still, exploring more of the key artists and many of the short-lived bands and smaller labels of the time. highlights include the dynamite funk / samba jam ‘faz tanta tempo’ by renata lu, a great funky cover of gilberto gil’s ‘bananeira’ by emilio santiago and a rare slice of breezy soul, ‘supermarket’, by pete dunaway aka paulistano, one of a group of artists giving themselves a western-sounding name at the time.the album is compiled and annotated again by leading brazilian music dj cliffy, the man behind london club night batmacumba. the longest running brazilian club night in england, now enjoying a bi-monthly residency at london’s notting hill arts club. buy here

a different groove than usual for jose roberto bertrami -- and a record that definitely lives up to the promise of its title! bertrami's really broken free from the regular azymuth groove on this set -- much more so than on some of his recent solo albums -- playing here with a vibe that's very jazzy at times, with a range of different modes -- mod one minute, funky the next, and sweetly straight at other points! jose roberto handles his familiar fender rhodes on most tracks -- but also plays a bit of organ and acoustic piano as well -- and other instrumentation includes guitar, bass, and drums -- plus added horns on some of the fuller, funkier tracks. a few tunes feature some great wordless vocals from bertrami -- scatting along with his keyboards in a warm and breezy way -- and production on the set is great, thanks to the far out touch -- never too smooth, and quite different from any of bertrami's albums recorded in the us. titles include "laranjeiras", "choro", "no tempo da bossa", "o pescador", "ecstatic 70", "brilliante", "eighties times", "aventura", and "maixa". buy here

this is cherio verde by danilo caymmi; flautist, violeiro and composer, youngest son of legendary composer dorival caymmi (who passed away this summer) and the brother of dori and nana caymmi. this is a groundbreaking album, independently produced by his then-wife ana terra caymmi. inspired by antonio adolfo's "feito em casa" series. his former wife, ana terra rounded up milton nascimento and airto moreira and a cast of lesser known great musicians to guest star on this amazing album which they recorded in 1977 at the height of the military dictatorship in brazil. it features modern sambas with some jazz accents, notably the bomb track "mineiro", with some politically tinged lyrics, this album works from start to finish, and stands alone as a gem of record and time capsule. whatmusic re-issued this album a couple of years ago, and its still available. buy it here

furthermore danilo caymmi just gave a concert in zurich, that we had the rare pleasure to witness and had the chance to meet the man himself after his concert for a small exchange. salve danilo!!

daniel haaksman writes: i have a special, world exclusive pre-announcement for y´all to make and it´s about an upcoming release of mine called bossa do morro. "morro" means "hill" in portugese, in rio particulary, the hills are the cite where many of the city´s favelas are located. thus bossa do morro is a baile funk remix compilation i comissioned to celebrate this year´s 50th anniversary of bossa nova, the great musical genre that was birthed in rio in the late 50s. when i first heard about this anniversary i immediately thought that there should be a baile funk bossa nova remix release. but soon i skipped the thought as i knew that it was quite impossible to get any original bossa tracks for official remix use. then i met cristina ruiz-kellersmann, the brazilian wife of universal jazz germany boss christian kellersmann, and i suggested to her the compilation idea. she was enthusiastic about it and presented the idea to her husband who greatly supported the idea, together with universal jazz a+r matthias kuennecke. eventually i was able to get access to parts of the bossa nova catalogue of universal. unfortunately not all of their prime tracks could be used, but bossa do morro now features remixes of classic songs by joão gilberto, tom jobim, sergio mendes and klaus doldinger amongst others. the remixes are by rio´s finest djs such as dj amazing clay, dj edgar, dj nazz, dj marrentinho, dj fu, dj dinho and a few others. the results are simply amazing. think of "girl from ipanema" with a miami bass beat. think of "insensatez" with a tamborzão. it´s crazy. and i can assure you that there was a never a similar project like this released in brazil.

how come that todays hottest rio funk djs and producers never touched the big music legacy from their very own city? well, there´s various reasons. for cariocas (=the people from rio) bossa is the music made by the 1950´s bobos - the bohemian bourgeoise which hung out in copacabana, ipanema and leblon. these are area that are culturally and socially far away from the grim reality in the favelas. but it´s not only this barrier that hardly produced any bossa-baile funk tracks so far (except for dj sandrinho´s famous "funk bossanova"). for the rio funk dj culture, bossa´s just been far from being cool or dope , it´s music to which you can´t really grind your teenage booty to. thus hardly any funk dj samples mpb (=musica popular do brasil) or 1950s, 1960s brazilian music. to funk djs, music from the usa or europe is cool to sample, but certainly not the music that their grandma´s or parents were listening to. so bossa do morro is truly a debut piece. the compilation not only cultivates the first bossa/baile funk pairing, it´s a compilation that probably will be considered blasphemic in brazil, where the music from the favelas is largely still considered trash. but maybe - hopefully - this image will get a slight correction when people will finally hear that even the most crude mpc based arrangement with a chunky tamborzão beat can pefectly support a subtle song by tom jobim.

watch out for the full compilation, scheduled for an october 17th release on both vinyl and cd through universal jazz germany. a 12" vinyl pre-release with four tracks will be released mid september. watch this space for some more news (sorry i cant give you any free downloads of this project).

tim maia (1977)

70s soul from brazil -- and a tremendously strong effort from the legendary tim maia! this record was tim's first after an initial run on polydor -- and it shows maia tightening up his groove even more, but still avoiding the slicker sounds of later years. there's a really focused sound here that's totally great -- one that shows that maia's work was hardly just some happy cross-cultural accident, and instead the careful work of an artist who was out to challenge the best american soul acts of the time! there's a warm little groove to most of the tracks -- tripping along lightly in the vein of some of our favorite us mellow soul from the mid 70s -- an approach that's mostly soul, but with some funky undercurrents -- and often smooth, but never cloying or overly commercial.

tetine - let your x's be y's

proof that brazil's the place for some of the hardest-hitting and most genre-crossing grooves today -- thanks to the sound of groups like tetine and some of their contemporaries! the album's got a wicked blend of familiar favela grooves and artier new wave moments -- almost a sao paulo equivalent to the kind of street/club/art crossover sets coming out of new york in the early 80s! most numbers are heavy on beats and basslines, but also carry complicated elements on keyboards and sound samples -- used somewhat sparely and coldly, but warmed up from the bottom with a good dose of booty-shaking elements. although contemporary, tetine's music sits surprisingly well next to the soul jazz label's explorations of older new wave scenes from the us, uk, and brazil -- making the imprint a great place to launch a set like this! titles include "eu to aberta", "i go to the doctor", "you're the one", "everything must die", "men in uniform", "entertainment no 249", "what a gift to get", and russian roulette. cd also features the bonus track "i go to the doctor (css rmx)".

toni tornado - br3

funky soul from toni tornado -- one of the first talents in brazil's samba soul generation of the 70s! toni's got a style that's a lot like early work by tim maia -- a blend of american funk and soul, with traces of some of the other brazilian arranging styles that were popular at the time -- all rolled into a unique set of grooves that's fresher than most things we've heard in a long time! arrangements are by similar funky talents -- like waltel branco, paulo moura, and dom salvador.

terca -- ruby -- brasilian soul & disco

a hip little look at the brazilian soul scene of the 70s -- one that focuses mostly on club oriented grooves, instead of some of the rougher funk of the time! the sound here is totally great -- with warm production that rivals the clubbier styles of the new york or philly scenes in the us in the mid 70s -- but still plenty of touches that set the music apart as brazilian -- not just portuguese lyrics, but also some interesting percussion, unusual rhythms, and a slightly different conception overall. 20 tracks in all -- including "valeu a pena" and "forca do pensamento" by lady zu, "vida melhor" by luicana mello, "de bar em bar" by cassiano, "mr john it's pay day" by gerson king combo, "voce e eu eu e voce" and "nao va" by tim maia, "vem menina" by emilio santiago, "dancando com voce" by ronaldo correa, "voce vai estar na minha" by negra li, "txim plam" by jorge mautner, "nada mais" by golden boys, "uniao black" by uniao black, and "aquela paz" by marcos sabino.

terca -- emerald -- brasilian soul & disco

a wealth of rare 70s funk and club from brazil -- most of which hasn't been reissued before! much of the work here was recorded for the rca label in brazil -- and unlike the universal or emi-held labels, which have gotten good coverage in recent years, the farther reaches of the rca/bmg catalog are mostly untapped -- which makes this set a real discovery for our ears! there's a few cuts here by banda black rio, but also a lot more by artists we're hearing here for the first time ever -- some very groovy groups who mix american club and soul influences with some great brazilian bits as well. plus, some of the tracks here even have an influence from 80s groove and early hip hop styles -- a really under-documented part of the brazilian soul scene. titles include "filhos de zambi" by trio ternura, "vem fazer glu glu" by sergio mallandro, "o que e bom" by lulu santos, "rio sinal verde" by junior mendes, "melo do tagarela" by miele, "mas que ideia" by sergio mallandro, "chega mais" by banda black rio, "eu sem voce" by painel de controle, "saiba ser feliz" by tarantulas, "funk no 1" by cornelius, and "natureza viva" by brenda.

azymuth - butterfly

always-great work from azymuth -- one of the few combos who never get stale, no matter how long they keep on grooving! the album's titled after the herbie hancock classic "butterfly" -- and it's put together with a sublime quality that really stretches back to the best styles of the 70s fusion generation -- both for herbie and the group! the core trio is still wonderfully in place after all these years -- jose roberto bertrami on fender rhodes and hammond, ivan conti on drums and percussion, and alex malheiros on bass and guitar -- and although there's a tiny bit of vocals on the set, they're more instrument-like, and fit in beautifully with the keyboard-driven grooves. arthur verocai makes a great appearance on the set on guitar, and also handles arrangements on two cuts -- and robertinho silva plays some added percussion on the record as well. the group do a wonderful job with herbie's "butterfly" -- then move onto some of their own great material that includes "caititu", "os cara la", "morning", "next summer in rio", "new dawn", and "avenida rio branca".

seu jorge -- live at montreux (dvd)

take it from us, seu jorge puts on one of the greatest live shows you'll ever hope to see -- and what's even more amazing is that most of the power of his performance comes from only voice and guitar, plus a bit of added instrumentation on the stage! this montreux performance from 2005 really captures jorge's live genius well -- and given that it was released before the steve zizzou hype, it's nicely free of the bowie material that jorge has been performing heavily on his recent us tours.

osmar milito - viagem (japanese paper sleeve edition)

gentle, breezy, and wonderful -- a rare 1974 album by osmar milito, a brazilian arranger of the post-bossa era, and a mad talent with a bit of a dark edge! miltio plays piano on the set -- working in front of larger orchestrations in a mode that's not unlike the late 60s albums of burt bacharach, but fitted with some different touches that give the set a bit more of a groovy 70s sound.

amazing work from os ipanemas -- a group who just keep sounding better and better with each new recording! the set's easily the most mature of their recent comeback stretch -- and has these magnificent arrangements that almost remind us of moacir santos at points -- a gentle balance between bossa, jazz, and more angular modes -- all handled with a great deal of warmth, in a sound that's clean, fresh, and totally exhilarating! there's none of the too-easy modes you might expect from a group headed up by two older brazilian musicians -- and despite the frequent press that equates these guys with the buena vista social club, the sound here is really something different altogether -- hardly too-traditional modes, and instead the kind of music that would sound equally amazing if it were coming from the hands of a younger, unknown group.

Marcos Valle (1983) (Japanese paper sleeve edition)

Marcos Valle might look a bit sad and forlorn with all those fruity drinks on the cover -- but the record itself is a wonderfully upbeat session, and one that's very much in the same modern soul mode of Vontade De Rever Voce! As on that record, the sound here shows strong traces of Marcos' early 80s collaborations with Leon Ware in California -- and the overall groove is a nice mix of boogie, two step, and smoother soul -- a genre that we never would have expected during Valle's bossa years, but which comes off tremendously well here! There's lots of warmly stepping bass amidst smooth jazzy horns -- and the tracks all have a compressed groove that keeps things nice and crisp -- plenty classy, in a way that's supremely appealing if you dig early 80s mellow soul.

gal costa - cantar

a beautiful gal costa record that isn't as crazy as her psychedelic recordings, but it more than makes up for it with some haunting arrangements by the likes of caetano veloso, gilberto gil, and joao donato. gal sings some beautiful versions of tracks like donato's "a ra" (with extra lyrics by caetano!), "ate quem sabe", and "flor de maracuja", and caetano's "lua, lua, lua, lua" and "joia". also with a nice version of "barato total", with a guest appearance by gilberto gil! very nice stuff, and one of her best from the 70s. now remastered and repackaged -- in much better shape than the earlier cd reissue!

wild one! although this album isn't as crazy in the way that gal's 1969 psychedelic albums are, it's got some very cool orchestral arrangements, and great small combo playing by the likes of gilberto gil, tenorio jr., wagner tiso, and roberto menescal. the arrangements are more subtle than earlier releases, and there's no "hit-you-over-the-head" guitar parts -- but instead, there's a very sophisticated approach to the material that approaches caetano veloso's best work from the time. gal does a great version of veloso's cut "relance".

a fantastic deodato album from 1973! although this was recorded at the same time as his american releases on on cti, the album has much more of the flavor of his tighter, jazzier, earlier work -- with loads of funky keyboards, and lots of shorter tracks that drive along nicely with interplay between electric bass and brazilian rhythms. the whole thing's a wonderful bit of electric brazil from the 70s - with a groove that's hard to match by other albums.

elis regina mpb especial 1973 (dvd)

stunning -- and a rare tv special from 1973, featuring the lovely elis regina singing with small combo backing -- all filmed in glorious black and white! the quality of the image is incredible -- like footage from a french new wave film of the early 60s, directed with a level that captures the depth of emotion, spirit, and soul that elis brought to her music! honestly, we're stunned at how great this is -- a film that not only lives up to all of elis' best music on record, but which also provides a visual level that's enough to make even the most casual listener fall in love with her music! the program has been lovingly restored with beautiful quality -- and the dvd also features bonus credits! almost 100 minutes in length -- with titles that include "meio de campo", "estrada do sol", "upa neguinho", "boa noite amor", "doente morena", "20 anos blues", "atras da porta", and "aguas de marco". moro no brasil -- a film by mika kaurismaki (dvd)

brazilian music from the ground up -- a fascinating array of recordings made as part of the film moro no brasil, presented in all their gritty brilliance! the focus here is on the music of the people -- recorded either live in the streets or at mika's bar, as part of an all-star performance done for the movie! it might be tempting to tag the effort as kind of a brazilian version of the buena vista social club, but there's a real difference here in that the music here is still very much "alive" and part of brazilian culture today -- and not just a relic of the past preserved by a few conscientious intruders. styles are a mix of samba, bossa, and many other rootsier modes -- and artists include seu jorge, caju e castanha, funk n lata, ivo meirelles, jacinto silva, zenith, dona zelia, maje mole, joao do pifano, silveiro pessoa, mestre salustiano, and antonio nobrega. film is 105 minutes, in color -- with english subtitles. bonus features include an interview with director mika kaurismaki and additional footage of carnaval and capoeira! an essential selection of work from one of brazil's greatest soul artists! cassiano was part of a rare breed of brazilian artists in the 70s -- artists like tim maia or gershon king, who were more inspired by american soul than they were the changes that were going on in brazilian music around them. cassiano was probably the sweetest, mellowest, and smoothest of his generation -- as you'll hear on this long-overdue selection of work from his early 70s years. the set was put together by ed motta, who claims cassiano as a huge influence on his work -- and the selection of 14 tracks features sweet soul ballads, soaring midtempo groovers, and even a few slightly funky numbers. vocals are all in portuguese -- and titles include "e isso ai", "melissa", "de bar em bar", "nao fique triste", "a lua e eu", "ja", and "uma lagrima". the whole thing sounds more like early 70s new jersey than post-tropicalia brazil -- but that's a-ok by us!

cartola - o mundo e um moinho

a 70s gem from cartola -- proof that the singer almost sounded better in these later years of his career! there's a simple brilliance here that's hard to deny -- aging vocals mixed with spare backings on guitar, flute, and percussion -- all in a samba style that's never too driving, nor overly-emotive -- but which resonates strongly from cartola's many years on the planet. the session was one of a few that the singer did for the folkloric marcus pereira label -- and it's got a wonderfully respectful sound throughout.

ultimate brazilian breaks & beats

given the amount of great brazilian funk recorded back in the 70s, it's hard to think of any one record as being the "ultimate" -- but we've gotta admit that this set does a pretty darn great job! the tracks here are a really mad batch of numbers -- tunes that not just have some samba soul touches, but which also showcase some really weird production styles and instrumental turns -- the kinds of modes that were cooked up heavily in rio and sao paulo studios back in the 70s, often without any sort of referent to work going on in the us or europe at the time! if you're looking for funky tracks destined to blow your mind, this package is a heck of a great place to start -- and a good number of the titles here are ones that we haven't seen reissued elsewhere. tracks include "big splash" by sos, "tema da zorra" by orquesta cbd, "jungle fever" by super erotica, "se voce quiser" by ed lincoln, "juju man" by hot stuff band, "sultana" by aquarius band, "the king's bounce" by fre som orchestra, "batucada tropical" by brasil tropical, "kool & the gang" by cry babies, and "mister funk" by miguel de deus. cd features the bonus tracks "guitarra", "batulona", and "disco chuva".

heavy funk from the favelas -- and an 8 track set with way more music than you might expect from the ep in the title! the cuts here are all from contemporary brazil, and offer up that searing blend of hip hop, dancehall, and other urban styles that have been simmering from the scene of late. but unlike more mainstream collections of this work, the material here is all pretty progressive -- really offbeat in terms of production and arrangements, and often moving at a blistering speed that's quite impressive. titles include "real (ebb mix)" by mc gringo & mc binho, "blindao" by beto da caixa, "my neck my back (rmx)" by cabide dj, "eu fui de todas elas" by mr catra, "battle break funk" by zezinho, and "que delicia" by cabide dj. a samba soul masterpiece from jorge ben -- one of the most brilliant records to come out the fertile late 60s brazilian scene -- and an incredible album that works with the psychedelic flourishes of ben's contemporaries and a deeper undercurrent of soul & funk! this is one of the most amazing early jorge ben lps, recorded at the end of the 60s, when jorge was singing with a stone-cold soul sound. the sharp, tight arrangements by rogerio duprat & jose briamonte made tracks like "pais tropical", "take it easy my brother charles", and "que pena" immediate classics -- while the percussion and rhythms of trio mocoto provide a good part of the unique backdrop. the album is a mix of funky samba, soaring brazilian soul, and sweeping orchestrations that give the whole thing a jazzy finish -- and it's some of the best work that jorge ben ever recorded! other tracks include "criola", cade tereza", "domingas", "barbarella", "quem foi que roubou a sopeira" and more.

far out recordings pays homage to one of brazil's most accomplished artist and composer whose influence in defining the shape and direction of bossa nova from the 1960s to present day cannot be ignored. carioca soul is a collection of marcos’s personal favourite tracks from his three studio albums on far out recordings between 1994 and 2008 and includes 3 previously unreleased live versions of samba de verao, mentira and batucada surgiu. the album features two of rio’s bossa and samba veterans joyce on the track valeu and wilson das neves playing on escape. carioca soul is proof of marcos’s dogged determination to transcend the traditions and structures of bossa nova and testament to his ability to re-ignite a genre whilst never veering away from its fundamental soul. the compilation acts as an indulgent blend of all the favourite songs which have been released exclusively on far out recordings available on one complete collection for the first time ever.

a great look at the legendary tim maia -- easily one of the strongest soul stars in 70s brazil! back in the day, tim maia was one of the greatest things going in brazil -- an artist who strongly embraced us modes of funk, soul, and club -- and who managed to cook up a groove that easily rivaled that of his inspirations! unlike others in his generation, tim usually leaned more towards american modes than brazilian ones -- so there's less rootsy elements in his music than you might find in the samba soul years -- and usually more of a focus on his own great lyrics. but that never keeps things from getting funky -- because many of the titles here have a nice little groove -- and maia's sense of balance during these years really stands out from some of his later, mellower work.

2 classics from djavan -- back to back on a single cd! the first album is sublime early work from djavan -- a bit of jazz, a bit of samba, and a bit of soul -- all wrapped together in wonderfully warm arrangements! the sound here is sophisticated without being sleepy, and there's still a lightness to djavan's music at this point -- a style that manages to plumb the depths of his vocals, yet without some of the too-emotive moments of later work -- a very careful balance that makes for an album that's lovely and delightful all the way through! the set includes loads of nice tracks -- like the jazzy "serrado", plus "minha mae", "numa esquina de hanoi", "alagoas", "samba dobrado", and "dupla traico". alumbramento is a great album from djavan -- quite ambitious and sophisticated, but in a way that leans heavily on his amazing vocals and great songwriting skills! as on most of his best albums from the time, he's working with a small core group of jazz players -- sensitive musicians who provide some incredible accompaniment to his songs -- in ways that are almost a second generation take on the styles first laid out by milton nascimento a few years before, but at even deeper levels. the record features a guest appearance by chico buarque, and tracks include "a rosa", "tem boi na linha", "sim ou nao", "aquele um", "meu bem querer", and "sururu de capote".

there isn't an american or british equivalent to ed motta - this eccentric and outrageously gifted brazilian is a complete one-off. who else would move so confidently from pharoah sanders-style space jazz to broadway musical pastiche, throwing in ballads, funk, soul-dance, pop-samba and a stunning earth, wind and fire tribute (a charada) along the way? occasionally you might be reminded of prince, or van hunt, who pay their respects to established pop and r&b norms while subverting or reinventing them. however motta, as songwriter, producer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist, goes a little further.each track on aystelum creates a different mood; each is worthy of close study, but the album rolls by as easily as the smoothest "funky brazilian love affair" compilation. the medley from his musical 7, which briefly interrupts the flow, is anachronistic and tongue-in-cheek but ultimately charming. motta's lead vocals, in portuguese throughout, are consistently gorgeous. feelgood, intelligent pop of the highest order.

an oldie but a goodie. a wonderful collection of brazilian grooves, all hand-picked by jazzanova with a real ear for unusual sounds, complicated rhythms, and some of the more beautiful sounds coming out during the 60s and 70s! most of the work here is of older vintage and brazilian origin, but the set also features a few newer numbers from other parts of the globe, snuggled in very nicely next to the classics, in a way that makes for a very unified sound! there's definitely a strong blue brazil vibe going on here, but the styles are also a bit more spaced out, not just the usual bossa and funk tracks, but some wonderful genre-bending material that really makes the set a treasure. 20 tracks in all. check it.

sujinho and cassiano (nossa)
the rising stars of music’s new free-for-all scene, new york based djs and producers sujinho and cassiano are working their asses off so you can dance off yours. each other’s right hand man since cassiano moved from his native brazil and took up residence in brooklyn with the one they call “little dirt,” sujinho and cassiano have been pushing the limits of electronic music for years. but 2005 saw the game really start to change. commandeering the baile funk boom in new york, the duo launched favela clash, nyc’s first and only regular baile funk party in the summer of 2005. simultaneously, they dropped i love baile funk the seminal mixtape that caught the world’s notice. In effortlessly blending and re-twisting rio funk with everything from houston rap, london grime, b’more shake, kingston dancehall and nyc hip hop, they put baile funk into a context that caused a lot of people to finally be like “oh shit – now I get it!” rating it 3.5 of 4 stars, urb magazine called i love baile funk a “banging juxtaposition of throwback and lurch forward soundclash, the strange kind of mutation that occurs when american music funnels into more isolated countries and mingles with the sounds of the jungle – fascinating.” bpm magazine named i love baile funk an “essential listen” in their baile funk issue.

phat kev has been djing since the age of 13. now he's still a youthful 22 years old but you can really tell that he has all those years of dj experience under his belt for he sounds older than his years. what I mean by this is that his track selection, programming mixing and scratching skills are at such an exceptionally high level that he is already on a par with legends such as dj yoda, kenny dope, dj shadow and z-trip. It's no surprise therefore that he he reached the final of the dmc world dj championships in 2003. and so to the album, an official first as it happens to be the world first officially licensed all-brazilian cut-and-paste mix cd. It's an absolute classic and is sure to light up any soiree, bar, shop or club where you might play it or hear it play. yes some of the tracks will sound familiar but with over 30 cuts there are countless other gems that you won't have heard of and if you are a beats 'virgin' then you shall be wholeheartedly amazed and as the cd winds down you will willingly be winging your way down to the nearest independent store to go hunt out more of the same. this really is a superb offering and a must have if you are a fan of brazilian music or even if you're not.

mzuri sana means "very good" in swahili, and this hip hop group from sao paulo, is just that. bringing a style reminiscent of tribe called quest to the brazilian hip hop scene. the group is formed by secreto, dj suissac and rapper parteum. mzuri sana, in the vein of the former native tounges, take a new approach to brazilian underground rap, one that separates itself from its contemporaries by not only refering to violence but instead using smarter lyrics, referencing machado de assis, fast and intelligent rhymes and a sound mixture of mpb, electronic music and samba; they remind more of their contemporaries rappin hood or marcelo d2. mzuri sana produced one ep named bairros cidades estrelas contelações in 2003 and the album opera oblíqua in 2006 both for trama records.

the long-awaited return of uniao black, one of the greatest brazilian funk bands of the 70s, sounding better than ever here with some great raw production! the record's easily some of the best work the group's ever done and although current, the whole thing's got a searing sound that almost even blows away their key 70s work for mercury, a groove that's heavy on the bottom rhythms, and snaps along with more of a deep funk approach than the group ever had! a few tracks feature some nice keyboards in the mix, and the group's horn section is as tight as they ever were but even more interesting is the fact that the album was done in collaboration with brooklyn's embassy sound productions, which probably accounts for some of the deep funk touches. tremendous work all around and an instant classic you'll gladly stock next to your samba soul gems from years back.

brazilian producer, arranger, and singer/songwriter celso fonseca has been a vital part of the brazilian music scene for many years, collaborating with some of the most successful and well-known performers of the music-rich nation including gilberto gil, cataeno veloso, bebel gilberto and clara moreno, to name a few. over the course of several solo albums, including the international hit "natural", he has presented a more traditional approach to bossa nova with acoustic instruments mixing with subtle electronic flourishes. his warm, seductive style has been praised throughout brazil and, is quickly gaining recognition throughout the world. his newest release from 2007 features nicely upbeat work from, an album that has him sparkling with even more confidence than before, all while hitting a nicely jazzy groove! the music here carries echoes of older samba and bossa roots, but the execution is quite contemporary and never bogged down in too much electronics or beats, but given a vibrant sensibility that's a bit of a change from celso's earlier work. fonseca handled all arrangements himself, and the music features a great blend of acoustic and electric elements all filtered down nicely into a seductive groove that fits wonderfully with celso's raspy vocals. don’t miss the chance to hear brazil’s latest rising star.

banda eta carinae is the name of a new musical project that comes from the pernambuco brazil scene. with an electronic profile of organic parts, the project features musicians already known locally, and interenationally: in the nineties, leadsinger dirceu melo was the former, singer and guitar player of the band jorge cabeleira. with the end of group, he went to change his artistic approach. the first album of eta carinae – mirando a estrela – is the result of this change. the sound of eta carinae is a perfect marriage between electronic beats and the organic elements, including regional rhythms like the baião, forró, samba, rock and reggae. following the fundaments of the manguebeat, the objective is to make universal music with a touch of roots, that brings it up to date for the new generation. the album "mirando a estrela" in brasil is considered one of most important cd's released in 2006. and like the star of the same name, they are ever changing and shine brightly from the brazilian skies. check them out.,

tamy's music is bossa nova with a 21st century twist. hailing from vitoria, brazil, the singer/songwriter mixes mpb with electronic beats, croons to the swing of rio's famous samba-funk and sings softly alongside afrobrazilian grooves. add to the mix her melodic vocal arrangements and a danceable beat and you have something everyone can appreciate. the single 'tudo bem', from her debut album 'soul mais bossa', has recently been praised in the uk by the likes of ninja tune's mr. sruff. says mr. scruff: "wriggly!! 'tudo bem' is top tune, is fantastic. It's got that great manic latin vibe, but keeps it controlled enough to walk alongside more restrained dance floor tunes." check out this artist. i love her music and so will you.

a wonderful step forward for the mighty seu jorge, a great departure from his previous albums, but a set that's every bit as great! the style here is a bit more complex at times, not as immediately rootsy as on jorge's cru album, with some fuller production and instrumentation, yet never in a way that's crassly commercial or too slick. instead, it's almost like jorge has borrowed funkier elements of brazilian and brazilian-inspired grooves of both the past and present, mixing 70s samba soul with some of the more contemporary takes on the rhythms all in a blend that's totally great, thanks to his own sublimely soulful vocals!

mariana aydar - kavita 1
mariana aydar can be easily located. where there's good music, there she is, either in a traditional samba jamming, in a gig at the outskirts of town, in the studios, during carnival, in são paulo, rio or bahia. since she was born in são paulo, music is the air that she breathes. at 26, mariana aydar is considered one of the most promising singers of her generation. her debut album, kavita 1 (which means “poet” in sanskrit) reflects a musicality that daringly places side-by-side new songwriters, her own material and fresh renditions of brazilian pop classics. The album's artistic production bears the signatures of swinging bid and eclectic duani, and 6 tracks were mixed by mario caldato junior, sound engineer and producer, who had previously collaborated with major artists like marisa monte, beastie boys, beck, björk and planet hemp. in caldato's words, “mariana aydar is a very refreshing presence in the music produced today and she certainly will rock the scene with her adorable work”.

i just had the rare pleasure to see one of my favorite brazilian musicians live here in zurich. joyce is an incredible artist, and seeing her live was a real treat. over the years her voice doesn't seem to have changed one bit. in case you don't know joyce, this is her new album and quite possibly her best in years, with a set that's filled with the same scatting brilliance i loved in her classics from the 70s and 80s! it's done in collaboration with husband/drummer tutty moreno and the pair lead a small combo with a nicely jazzy feel that further enforces the freely soaring lines in joyce's vocals! instrumentation includes a shifting array of saxes, flute, clarinet, and piano plus plenty of warm guitar from joyce, played with a crystal clear and sensitive sound. she is also featured in one song on the beautiful new album of her daughter clara moreno, that i reviewed farther down on this page.

tremendous new work from arthur verocai, the brazilian legend who's best remembered for his sublime self-titled album from the 70s, but who sounds equally great on this contemporary release! the record has a really classic feel overall, warm, soulful, and filled with plenty of jazzy touches, the best of which are brought to the record by azymuth, who help verocai out on about half the album's tracks! but even without their assistance, the whole thing's still plenty darn great, a brilliant batch of original tunes that have a bubbling, mellow sort of majesty, a bit like marcos valle or edu lobo's best music of the early 70s, and with a similar sort of sophistication as well. verocai plays acoustic and electric guitar, and vocals are by a variety of guest singers who really get the spirit of the album nicely (including ivan lins on one track.) buy this album!

here's an infectious, bubbling rap samba that is a huge hit in brazil. rappin hood may look bad, but he started out as a choirboy in são paulo, where he was also influenced by candomblé, the african religion of brazil. accompanying him and lending authority to this jaunty venture is leci brandãom, a great sambista in her own right. as she says; "rap is the new rhythm in samba, and rappin hood is the new sambista." the song, 'sou negrao' is a playful paean to the black contribution to the music of brazil and the world. It's a veritable lexicon of the greats of brazilian music, like paulinho da viola, jorge ben, pixinguinha - the list is quite lengthy! but he also pays tribute to martin luther king, bob marley and james brown - like he says: It's a black thing. but somehow, both the video and vibe are so cheerful and inclusive that anyone watching it can feel as black as they want

Intelligently chosen loops with groovy beats are it’s signature. by far one of the most sophisticated brazilian hiphop albums. It demonstrates that the sounds does not have to be rough and heavy to be dancable. flutuante, a primeira audição e a que fica, insanos por natureza and e rimando que se aprende are the tracks. bonde do rolê is a baile funk group from brazil consisting of mcs pedro d'eyrot and marina ribatski, and dj/mc rodrigo gorky. they started in their hometown curitiba in the south of brazil, mixing rock guitar riffs with funk carioca (sometimes known as baile funk or brazilian funk). the trio did their first major tour in 2006, with cansei de ser sexy. international producer diplo first found out about the band through their myspace account, and pushed them using his own fledgling label, mad decent, before bonde was signed to domino in 2006. "we just started making music out of fun—we didn't have any intentions to work professionally with music," said rodrigo gorky. bonde has been used in various media after being signed to the british label domino records: solta o frango (which literally means: "release the chicken") is currently heard in a worldwide campaign for the cellphone company nokia. other songs by bonde do rolê include bondallica (an attack on metalheads which includes offenses to slipknot, manowar, and iron maiden frontman bruce dickinson), quero te amar, and melô do tabaco (released only as a 7" single). their first album, with lasers, is currently available through itunes and napster, and on vinyl and cd.

samba has an old soul and a new voice. ceu, the new princess of mpb.

another feather in the six segrees cap -- and like the rest of their brazilian music repertoire, an artist who seems bent on breaking down boundaries -- both in styles and generations! the 27-year old paulista ceu's got the same "old is new" feeling as some of the label's other work in recent years, a mode that takes older bossa, samba, and other styles (including dub) and reworks it using a lightly playful quality, and a relatively stripped-down feel overall. Instrumentation here is mostly acoustic, especially on the rhythms, but it does include some electric bits on keyboards and turntables, used lightly enough as to not interfere with the organic quality of the sound. Ceu's vocals are light, too, but also slightly raspy, in a way that makes them a lot better from some of the too-dreamy singing you might expect on a record like this

tita lima - 11:11  kajmere/belu music, 2006

brazilian beats and a bit of bossa - all topped by vocals from the lovely tita lima! the set’s got a sound that’s quite different from other recent brazilian-flavored work - in that tita’s often singing with a slightly spacey production style - one that takes the already airy quality of her vocals, and stretches it out even more - all to create a shimmering sort of sound that’s a great complement to the heavier beats at the bottom of the rhythmsif we had to pick a genre, we’d probably call this one modern bossa — but tita’s also clearly got ears for a wide variety of other sounds too, and brings in some nice doses of contemporary soul on a few tracks. titles include “dias de janeiro”, “essa moca ta diferente”, “a conta do samba”, “esquizofrevo”, “maremorso”, “traz um alvio”, and “catatonica”.

this is a film that is highly recommended by ours truly: glauber rochas's "deus e o diabo na terra do sol", brasil 1964.

the film starts in the 1940s, during another drought in the brazilian sertão, when ranch hand manuel (geraldo del rey) is fed up with his situation. his boss tries to cheat him of his earnings and manuel kills him, fleeing with his wife, rosa (yoná magalhães). now an outlaw, manuel joins up with a self-proclaimed saint who condones violence and preaches disturbing doctrines. it is now rosa who turns to killing and the two are on the move once again. and so it goes, the two running from one allegiance to another, following the words of others as they attempt to find a place in their ruthless land. blending mysticism, religion, and popular culture in this symbolic and realistic drama, rocha insists that rather than follow the external and obscure dogmas of culture and religion, man must determine his path by his own voice.

the film was nominated for the 1964 golden palm at the cannes film festival, but failed to win. it is considered by international critics to be one of the best brazilian movies of all time. it has influenced major filmmakers such as martin scorsese and sergio leone (henry fonda's duster in leone's "once upon a time in the west" was inspired by the long coat worn by the character antônio das mortes in rocha's film.

a gem of a record from lo borges - still one of the best brazilian songwriters ever, with talents that are alive and well more than 30 years after his classic debut and famous 70s recordings with milton nascimento! as with other of borges’ recent albums, the style here is almost a distillation of the approach from older years - a slight simplification and refocused version of his loftier music ideas, but still with an undeniable depth. lo borges sings, and plays piano and guitar at the head of the tight group on the record.

sabrina malheiros - equilibria

watch out for sabrina malheiros. her debut album equilibria, released in may by far-out records, was seriously well produced and acclaimed by international public and critic. less then 3 months after its release, equilibria had tracks remixed by maestros kenny dope from masters at work and became far-out’s best seller, a legendary record label based in london. the album is a sublime mix of bossas and sambas with touches of hip-hop, r 'n' b and electronica, which combines timeless brazilian songwriting with contemporary electronics and beats. written by by alex malheiros and sabrina and featuring from azymuth: jose roberto bertrami (keyboards) and ivan conti (drums/percussion) plus infamous uk jazz-soul-funk legends incognito, bluey and his son daniel maunick (aka dj venom, who produced the album). legendary brazilian percussionist cidinho moriera guests. not bad for a 26 year-old girl from rio de janeiro, raised in one of the highest musical qualities cots.

original soundtrack brasileirinho - choro in rio

the original soundtrack of the documentary movie brasileirinho directed by mika kaurismäki presenting on 19 tracks the great masters of choro music. a loving tribute to the brazilian genre of choro - one of the first truly modern musics to emerge from rio, still going strong all these many years later! as in his previous film, moro no brasil, director mika kaurismaki focuses both on younger and older artists of the genre - showing the way the style is passed onto a new generation, and reinterpreted in ways that keep it alive and well into the 21st century, the cd features songs from the film played by different groupings of artists who include ze da velha, yamandu costa, teresa cristina, trio madeira brasil, zeze gonzaga, paulo moura, edson 7 cordas, cristavao bastos, rui alvim, and marcello goncalves. titles include “machucando”, “santa morena”, “assanhado”, “brejeiro”, “chorinho de gafieira”, “formosa”, “bole bole”, and “carinhoso”. highly recommended!

seu jorge - the life aquatic studion sessions

one of the most charming things about wes anderson's last movie, the life aquatic with steve zissou, was brazilian singer/actor seu jorge's sailor troubadour who appeared throughout singing bossa nova-flavoured versions of david bowie classics in portuguese. six of these reinterpretations surfaced on the movie's soundtrack – now the entire recording session has been made available. aside from those tracks already released (rebel rebel, life on mars?, starman, rock'n'roll suicide, five years and queen bitch), here a further seven slabs of bowie get charmingly redrawn by seu's fragile guitar and positively horizontal vocals. changes is a revelation, hanging heavy with even more regret than the original, while the melodic intricacy of oh you pretty things fits the stripped-down arrangement more than snugly. what could easily be perceived as curiosity or gimmick has instead recharged these classics. but don't just take our word for it. as bowie himself notes, "had seu jorge not recorded my songs acoustically in portuguese, i would never had heard this new level of beauty which he has imbued them with".
